I didn’t get a ton of gaming in these past two days, but I did put some work into Control. It’s one of my favorite games this year, but I’ve been sidetracked with a few other games since I bought it.
I love the way the game encourages exploration, and despite being third person, feels like a Metroidvania in a ton of ways. As you go through the game, there are areas that are inaccessible to you at first, but later, once you have different powers or accomplish different tasks, you can circle back to them and reach them. Usually there is a reward in a chest – some type of upgrade to your weapons or your personal stats. Unfortunately, the frequency that you find these upgrades does make these rewards feel a little uninspired.
The game’s is massive, so it’s a good thing fast travel is available at certain checkpoints. It makes getting around a little bit easier, but not completely simple.
I’m also really digging the game play. It makes me feel like a complete and total badass. I get to shoot dudes and then use their corpses as weapons and use mind control to take over other dudes and have them fight on my side.
Will and Drew have put the nail in the coffin on their Bastion playthrough. What did they think of the game? Does it meet the hype in 2019? Is it worth playing again today?
Also, Drew dives a bit more in-detail with Control and Will chats about the 2014 release of Strider. Plus, thoughts on the newest PT hack, Drew’s backlog spreadsheet, and does Drew want the Genesis Mini?
